Industrial port (coal, iron, shipbuilding) on
Kyushu island, Japan; population (1987)
447,000. An atom bomb was dropped on it 9 Aug
1945. Nagasaki was the only Japanese port
open to European trade from the 16th century
until other ports were opened 1859. Three
days after Hiroshima, the second atom bomb
was dropped here. Of Nagasaki's population of
212,000, 73,884 were killed and 76,796
injured, not counting the long-term victims
of radiation.
